The Western Cemetery in Portland’s West End is a historic cemetery, most active in the early to mid-19th century. This was a time of growth in Portland, with significant immigration, mostly from Ireland. At the same time, traditional maritime trade included Maine ships involved in the trade of enslaved people and sugar cane from the Caribbean. This tour will focus on the sea captains and businessmen who profited from the slave trade and the immigrants of the period who provided much of the labor for Portland’s growth.
For the last few years, the Stewards of the Western Cemetery have been restoring this long-neglected cemetery. As we do, we uncover more stories of the lives of these 19th Century Mainers.
