Walking Woodfords Corner

Friends of Woodfords Corner

Once viewed primarily as a place to live near downtown Portland, Woodfords Corner has seen a revitalization over the past ten years back to the vibrant commercial center it once was. Following a 2016 project to redo the streets, sidewalks and public spaces of the area, new businesses have come to the district to join the existing long-time commercial tenants and create a vitality and walkability that had been lacking.

This walk will start below the Luminous Arbor, a public art piece installed as part of the 2016 project, and explore the many places and spaces in the Woodfords Corner neighborhood. You’ll learn about the history of the area and see murals and historically significant buildings and places. We’ll walk up Forest Avenue and visit Baxter Woods, once part of Mayor James Phinney Baxter’s estate and given to the city as a bird sanctuary after his passing. You’ll also hear about the diversity of the neighborhood and the opportunities it provides for residents of all backgrounds. We’ll end back in the heart of the Corner, where you’re encouraged to visit local shops and grab a bite to eat.

Feel free to leave your car at home here – Woodfords Corner is easily accessible by bike, food, and METRO (Route 2.) See you in the Corner!

Accessibility:

The walk is easily accessible via METRO from downtown Portland or Westbrook via the 2 bus. There is also bike parking in the area, and car parking on side streets. Most of the walk should be generally accessible though there may be some curbs without tipdowns or rough surfaces in some spots.
