Walk on the Wildside of Libbytown: Urban Nature Walk

A tour of forgotten places along the Fore River. A walk over train tracks, under highways and into the land of urban wildlife, scenic waterfront trails, and post-industrial wastelands. We’ll see forests, beaches, abandoned roadways, and grassland that are both unspoiled and distressed. We will also look at missed opportunities for riverfront access and planning decisions that led to an over-abundance of bridges and roadways.

Although the walk is mostly flat we will encounter some rough terrain including train tracks, tall grasses, gravel, and dirt paths. We are likely to see detritus from rousted campsites that may include discarded needles. The site has been made somewhat inaccessible by roadways so we’ll need to cross over a (very underused) highway off-ramp. Wear long pants and heavy shoes/boots. This is a nature walk so there are bugs, birds, and other critters that we may or may not see. Everyone has a different comfort level in these spaces but I’ve been walking around there for over a decade without incident and I would bring my 84 year old mother there.

Accessibility:

Unfortunately the river is not accessible to people in wheelchairs or certain assistive devices like walkers. The walk is mostly flat we will encounter some rough terrain including train tracks, tall grasses, dirt paths, and detritus from rousted campsites. Wear long pants and heavy shoes.
