In the 1790s, the early surveyors of the Belgrade Lakes Region were quick to recognize the importance of the narrow stream which led from Great Pond to Long Pond. A future dam at this location would provide waterpower leading to a settlement by exploiting this resource. Our walk will explore the sites of the mills and the businesses that led to a prosperous village, and the entrepreneurs who derived their wealth and livelihood from the mills.
Participants will not only learn about the mills, but they will also learn about the stores and other businesses that derived their livelihood from the products of the mills. The Belgrade Historical Society will supply maps, photographs, and other materials to supplement the discussion.
