Close your eyes for a moment on the Portland waterfront. Now open them—and try to unsee everything you know. The coffee shops, the condos, the parking lots. Gone. What stood here once was a scrappy, ambitious little town called Falmouth—one of the first places to pay the price for American defiance, when the British Royal Navy sailed in and burned it to the ground.
This walk is an act of collective imagination.
Together, we’ll move through Portland’s streets with historic maps in hand, conjuring the world that existed before and after one of the most dramatic moments in American history. No original buildings survived the burning — which means the entire city you’re walking through is a palimpsest, layers of history pressing up through the pavement beneath your feet. We’re going to feel those layers.
We’ll trace the ghost outlines of streets that changed their names as loyalty to the Crown gave way to something newer and fiercer. We’ll stand where taverns, wharves, and meetinghouses once buzzed with talk and conspiracy. We’ll meet the fascinating, flawed, occasionally ridiculous people who rebuilt this city from ash—and who pushed it away from the harbor, up the peninsula, reshaping Portland’s very geography as the politics of a new republic reshaped their sense of who they were.
Along the way, bring your questions and your theories. Why did they build there? Who got to name the streets—and who didn’t? What does a city look like when it’s trying to forget its colonial past and invent itself from scratch? There are no wrong answers on this walk, only richer and more interesting ones, and we want to hear yours.
Come curious. Come ready to look at an empty corner and see a crowd.
