Riverside: A Walk Through Time

Riverside Cemetery, Lewiston

A 45 minute walking tour of the historic Riverside Cemetery in Lewiston, Maine. Featuring the graves of the founders of Bates College (originally founded as the Maine State Seminary), the cemetery is the final resting place of more than 1000 veterans of every war from the American Revolution to the wars in the Middle East. The tour will also highlight our only Congressional Medal of Honor internment, George Leland, U.S. Navy Civil War Veteran. Many notable politicians are buried at Riverside as well, including Senator William Frye, Alonso Garcelon (who was a Maine Governor and Surgeon General during the Civil War). Our tour will also include a visit to the grave of a Civil War Veteran who, after the war, had a remarkable career as a vaudeville performer all over the country. Many other distinguished burials will also be featured during our walk.
