Take a journey through time as we explore the origins and growth of Greenville Village, from its beginnings on the East Cove of Moosehead Lake in the 1830s through the early 1920s. This engaging walking tour will highlight both existing local landmarks and the sites of long-gone treasures that played a crucial role in shaping the character of our community.
Together, we’ll visit iconic locations such as the Union Church, Sanders Store, the Shaw Block, Shaw Public Library, the William Shaw House, and the Charles Shaw House. You’ll also discover the histories of lost but legendary sites like the Lake House, Gower’s Grist Mill, the Eveleth House and Shaw’s Lumber Mill. Along the way, we’ll delve into the rich steamboat history of Moosehead Lake’s East Cove and its significance in Greenville’s early development.
Through these stories, attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for how the village evolved and meet the extraordinary individuals who propelled its progress, including lumber baron Milton Shaw and his enterprising sons William, Charles, and Albert. Their efforts, alongside others, helped shape Greenville Village into a vibrant community. Don’t miss this opportunity to step into history and see Greenville through the eyes of its pioneers!
