Old York and the River

Walk up the north side of the York River in an area rich in history. Taking Fisherman’s walk by the Historic New England Sayward Wheeler house. View the old railroad route, now a road. Cross a tidal dam that was built for mill energy and later a failed ice pond. Cross the nation’s smallest suspension bridge–the Wiggly Bridge. Traverse a wooded preserve along the river and visit Old York’s Hancock Warehouse, once owned by John Hancock and Maine’s oldest extant commercial structure. Cross the river on the oldest (in its location and configuration) bridge in Maine to Old York’s Elizabeth Perkins House and boathouse where New York rusticator Perkins restored and renovated her colonial residence. Crossing the bridge on the return, view the site of yet another tide mill dam, brickyard, and Mark Twain summer house. Bring comfortable shoes and water (no food for sale on this walk)and binoculars if you have them. Led by Deane Rykerson, preservation architect and former state representative. Assisted by Old York staff.
