Jane’s Walk Bangor: Lower Union Street

This walking tour will focus on the lower Union Street area of Downtown Bangor including Union Street and parts of Columbia Street, Main Street, and High Street. We will talk about buildings past and present, discussing the impressive buildings as well as their architects and residents. Some of the key buildings to be discussed will be the Bangor House, the Union Street Brick Church and vestry building, Bangor Opera House, Thomas A. Hill House, and more. Throughout the walk, we will be discussing Jane Jacob’s life, her work, and how many of her ideas are seen in Bangor today.

Wear comfortable shoes and dress weather appropriate. Water is encouraged. There are some hills on the walking route, but we will be making many stops along the way. The walk follows the sidewalks.

Leading the walk will be local historians, architects, and city planners/officials to help provide insight into the buildings, people, and also the changes that this part of downtown Bangor has seen over the years. We hope that the takeaways from this walk will increase awareness of Bangor’s great architecture and shine a light on some of the lesser known buildings in this area that so many drive and walk past every day, and the importance of Jane and her life’s work.

Accessibility:

The walking tour will stay on city sidewalks. We will be walking at a slower pace. While there are many hills in the area we will be taking the flattest route possible.
